About Dr. Keith Stein

Dr. Keith Stein was born in North Carolina, but grew up in Tennessee where he attended the University of the South in Sewanee and obtained his BA in Psychology. After graduation he worked as a counselor and emergency psychiatric team coordinator for several years before returning to school at Auburn University. Here, he received a BS in Animal Science with honors (1993) and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine with honors (1997).

Upon graduation, Dr. Stein worked in private general and emergency practices for several years before entering a residency program in Dentistry and Oral Surgery. Dr. Stein has opened six specialty practices and consulting businesses over the years while volunteering his time and expertise to work on captive zoo animals in Nashville (TN), Baltimore (MD), and Columbus (OH). He has also served as chairperson of the Review and Assessment Committee and as a member of the Credentials Committee for the American Veterinary Dental College. Dr. Stein has personally trained and educated thousands of veterinarians and technicians throughout the world.

Dr. Stein serves on the editorial review board for the Journal of Veterinary Dentistry, and has been published in veterinary journals internationally.

When not working, Dr. Stein enjoys staying active in his church, practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, riding motorcycles, and being a dad. He’s also involved in the Special Olympics and the Down Syndrome community.

Educational Background

Dr. Keith Stein has been involved with Veterinary Dentistry for over 30 years. After graduating with Honors from Auburn University College of Agriculture, he entered Auburn’s veterinary school, again graduating with Honors. While at Auburn, Dr. Stein served as Vice-Chair of the student chapter of the Emergency and Critical Care Society, Chairperson of the Programs and Presentations Committee during Open House, and was the Pfizer student representative on campus. Additional honors Dr. Keith Stein has achieved are:

Alpha Zeta Honors Society

Phi Kappa Phi Honors Society

Young Achievers Award from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine

After several years in general and emergency practice, Dr. Stein saw that there was something missing from the veterinary care being offered and entered into a residency at the University of Illinois to become a specialist in Dentistry and Oral Surgery. Here, he studied under Dr. Sandra Manfra, one of the founding members of the AVDC. Dr. Stein completed the typically three-year residency in just two years and successfully passed the rigorous credentialing examination on his initial attempt. This made him the first veterinarian from the states of Ohio, Tennessee, and Kentucky (where he has opened specialty practices) to become a board-certified Diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College.

Dr. Stein trained veterinary students and veterinarians during his residency, and lectured throughout the country. It was also during this residency that he conducted original research, courtesy of a grant that he was selected for through the Governor’s Venture Technology Program, into rotary endodontics. This research helped pave the way to fundamental and lasting changes in the way dental therapy for fractured teeth was being done. There are currently only 187 Active Diplomates of the American Veterinary Dental College. Dr. Keith Stein consults with veterinary staff all over the country and remains the most experienced board-certified AVDC Diplomate in the states of Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Western Pennsylvania.

Post Education

Dr. Keith Stein has opened six successful referral and consulting practices throughout the country. His experience remains unmatched in the states of Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, and Western Pennsylvania. Realizing a shortage of dental and oral surgical training being provided at veterinary colleges across the country, Dr. Keith Stein has decided to train and support veterinary hospitals, veterinarians, and veterinary technicians. Dr. Stein is also a clinical affiliate at both the University of Tennessee and Lincoln Memorial University Colleges of Veterinary Medicine. Given that dental and oral pathology are the most prevalent of all diseases encountered in veterinary medicine, and among the least emphasized in veterinary school curricula, he realizes that there is an ongoing and sometimes urgent need for dental specialists to be available for consults, training, surgical and dental intervention, and ultimately, support for general veterinarians.

Throughout the years, Dr. Stein has tended to hundreds of the nations finest canine officers, Search and Rescue Dogs, and support animals from New Jersey to Tennessee. Dr. Keith Stein has been a youth soccer coach and member of the Big Brother program as well as served as Education Committee Chairperson and Vice-Chair of MS Awareness groups.

“When our family vet discovered that my cat, Munchkin, was experiencing teeth resorption and likely was in pain, she recommended Dr. Stein to remove the deteriorating teeth. He and his wonderfully caring and attentive staff treated Munchkin like one of their own. They kept me fully informed about the procedures and what to expect. The surgery was successful, and my cat recovered without any problems. I can't thank Dr. Stein and his folks enough for their top-notch professional treatment.”

“I really have to thank [Dr. Stein and staff] for the amazing job they do every day in caring for our furry loved ones. They really have improved the health and wellbeing of my little guy, Turner. He has probably lived with dental disease and pain for a number of years. The change I see in him since his treatment is completely for the better. Turner is at least 14 years old and he is like a puppy again!”

“Since the first time I met Dr Stein on a professional basis he has been a great resource to me and the other veterinarians in our practice. He was instrumental in helping us set up our dental suite from the beginning. He is always available and eager to help with our cases anytime we call for a consultation. Our clients that we have referred to him have relayed back to us how professional thorough and kind he and his staff have been to them and their pets. As I have further been able to meet with him on a personal basis I have found him to be very approachable and eager to share his knowledge.”
